In Elisa New’s course, Poetry in America, all students must memorize and recite 8-14 lines of poetry.

In his biblical Hebrew class, Cian Power constructed various assignments around online recordings of the Bible.

As an instructor of biblical Hebrew, Cian Power had students record themselves reading a part of a Book of Jonah comic every two weeks, send the recording to him, and receive quick feedback.

In his sections, David Weimer does a weekly "exit poll" where students use the same piece of paper throughout the term to record thoughts at the end of section.

In "What is College and What is It For?" students think critically about higher education throughout the semester.  

In Animal Cognition, Dr. Irene Pepperberg's students learn how to evaluate scholarly work on animal cognition by trying to think from the animal's point of view of the experiment.  

In EPS182, Professor Francis MacDonald's students take a spring break trip to Sicily to study the geology of the region.  They later use this information to write mock geology journal articles.

During J-Term prior to Field Geology (EPS74), students live in the Mojave desert for almost three weeks to map different pieces of the area in groups.  The data will eventually be compiled into a composite class map.

In EMR16, students design their own wine or chocolate-tasting experiment in order to use the principles of experimental design and data analysis.  

In past offerings of EM-16: Real-Life Statistics, students virtually invested in the stock market in order to apply statistics concepts.  

In EMR16 and Stat139, students periodically do very brief "mini-assignments" which require them to submit or consider something that the instructor incorporates into lecture.

In Swedish Aa, Ursula Lindqvist and Suzanne Martin used the song "Den första gång jag såg dig" (The First Time I Saw You) by well-known Swedish troubador Birger Sjöberg to help students learn past-tense verbs and about Swedish culture.  

In Sociology 157, Dan O'Brien's students choose a topic of their choice relating to the Greater Boston Area.  All assignments center around this topic, culminating in a final paper that resembles an actual science paper.

In the revision stage of their the paper, Jerusha Achterberg uses vegetables to teach students how to structure their papers so that the organization coordinates with the thesis.  The idea behind this activity is to break the 5 paragraph mold students bring from high school. 

In her Expos section, Jerusha Achterberg teaches how to clearly describe the methods the will be used in a subsequent paper.  This activity was motivated by the fact that students were having trouble writing the methods section in their final paper proposals.
