In this activity, Nicole Deterding used a case study in her Sociology of Education section to integrate and apply theories of different types of capital (human, social, and cultural) and to clarify student understanding. 

In her first sections of the semester, Nicole Deterding discusses with her students how to read a sociology article.

In her sociology sections, Nicole Deterding used a controversial pop-sociology article written by Kay Hymowitz, the author of Manning Up: How the Rise of Women Has Turned Men into Boys, as a case study for Professor Mary Brinton's theory on the relationship between institutions and individual behaviors and actions.

In Sociology 157, Dan O'Brien's students choose a topic of their choice relating to the Greater Boston Area.  All assignments center around this topic, culminating in a final paper that resembles an actual science paper.

To prepare for interviews, students practice using their interview schedules in mock interviews with peers. 

For Rachel Meyer's junior tutorial on Social Class, students read each other's research proposals before class and then participated in an in-class workshop to discuss each proposal.

The purpose of this activity is for students learn more about "Problem Oriented Policing" (P.O.P.) methods, in contrast with traditional and community approaches to policing, and it was meant to especially drive home the challenges and complexities of the Scanning, Analysis, Response, and Assessment (SARA) model of police work.

Students write a response paper on their experience viewing art online versus in the context of a museum.

Students collect cognitive maps of safe and dangerous parts of Boston via street interviews and write research papers on their original findings. 

In this activity, students argue for the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of racial profiling in various policing contexts. 

For the junior tutorial term papers, students post their proposals online and then receive feedback from their peers. 

Throughout this course, students create and refine a definition of "culture" based on readings, discussions, and papers. 

For Bart Bonikowski's junior tutorial on Political Sociology, students are asked to submit response papers weekly to engage with the readings.

In this activity, peers try to convince each other of the impact and directionality of socioeconomic status and health outcomes.
