Bryan studies the history of universities, the curriculum and higher education's relationship to society in the 20th century. His qualifying paper examined intellectual changes at Yale University during World War II, and his current dissertation proposal is centered on the curricular debates of that period. Other interests include the internationalization of higher education and liberal arts around the world.

He also serves as a Teaching Fellow, Editor of the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Journal, and Co-Editor of the NAFSA Review of Global Studies Literature.
