Resuscitation of cryopreserved mouse embryos to generate mouse colony: Receiving and storing frozen embryos in LN2, thawing up to 2 straws, culturing embryos, perform up to 3 embryo transfers, housing offspring until weaning. Per diem costs will be charged extra.

Producing live offspring from cryopreserved or fresh sperm through IVF (1 litter): Per diem costs and mouse purchase for oocyte donors will be charged extra.

Generate live offspring from fresh embryos: Receiving fresh embryos, performing embryo transfers into recipients upon arrival. Housing offspring until weaning. Per diem costs will be charged extra.

Rederivation of mouse strain by embryo transfer: to generate pathogen free mouse lines. Per diem costs and mouse purchase for sperm or oocyte donors will be charged extra.

To initiate a Strain Rederivation Job please fill out the Service Request Form, and  forward the signed form to the GMF office at GMFmail@fas.harvard.edu, as an email attachment or fax to (617) 384-5008.

 Investigator Responsibilities:

  1. For cryopreserved embryos: arrange for shipment of at least 2 straws of embryos from the supplier to the GMF laboratory in dry LN2 shipping container. (Investigator carries the costs for shipment of the dry LN2 shipping container).
  2. Receiving live embryos at ambient temperature: arrange with supplier for availability of strain and approximate timeframe. GMF will schedule the time of shipping.
  3. For cryopreserved sperm: arrange for shipment of at least 2 straws/vials of sperm from the supplier to the GMF laboratory in dry LN2 shipping container. (Investigator carries the costs for shipment of the dry LN2 shipping container.)
  4. All rederivations are subject to veterinary review, approval, and health testing at investigator cost.  Please solicit health report from suppling institution prior to sample shipment.

GMF Responsibilities:

  1. Schedule shipping date of sample with sender or investigator.
  2. Receive sample in and store securely until rederivation procedure is performed. 
  3. Perform rederivation procedure based on sample type.  Embryo transfers will be into clean pseudopregnant recipient mice.
  4. Transfer recipient animals to quarantine area for temporary holding during gestation and until weaning.  Assist in coordiating any serological testing needed with FAS-OAR.
