MATH 1a uses a function based approach to model real world phenomena and explore the concepts of rate of change (derivate) and net change (integration). Students are asked to explore real data sets in various ways: to determine the appropriate function to model the data, use rates of change to make predictions and explore the causes and possible explanations for variability in the data, and use net change to provide estimates based on the data and explain the assumptions they are making in their interpretations. Before beginning Math 1a, students are expected to have a strong background in precalculus mathematics including graphing and algebraic manipulation of polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions.
