As many of you are aware the NX4 web client is prone to crashing and corrupting RCE sessions. We recommend against using the web client and instead you should use the desktop client. Instructions for downloading and installing the NX4 desktop client can be found here: http://projects.iq.harvard.edu/rce/nx4_installation
Update: 13:15 - HUIT discovered the issue is on some old firewall equipment that they are in the process of migrating and retiring. The network is currently stables, but it may be possible we will see further latency as they work through this issue.
As of 10:00am this morning (Sept 22nd) we are experiencing networking issues; connection to the RCE will be intermittent if not completely unavailable. We are working with Harvard University IT to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience.
CGIS Knafel is experiencing network issues, anyone trying to connect to the RCE or other HMDC hosted services during this time may have experienced slow performance or may have timed out. See the message below from HUIT:
Update: 09:30 - There was a memory leak in the NX4 portal server causing the kernel to terminate processes in order to keep the Operating System from failing. The NX4 processes were stopped and this is why users could not use the desktop or web clients. ssh was un-affected since ssh is load-balanced to the login servers. Things to check if you are unable to connect to the RCE:
Is there an active outage? We post any outages to the RCE itself, our RCE calendar, and to our outages mailing list in advance of planned maintenance windows. You can also check the HMDC status page. For more information, please see our page on RCE outages.
Are you over quota? If your home directory goes over 2GB, you won't be able to log in to a RCE desktop. Log in via SSH to clean up your home directory. See, How Do I Check My Quota? for more information.
