Ritual Studies in Science and Religion

Ritual is an important aspect of human experience. It has an impact on scientific practice as well as religious devotion. Modern technology impacts ritual practice through efficiency, but it also creates new forms of rituals that may not be recognized as such. We address ritual from an interdisciplinary perspective that utilized religious studies, anthropology, psychology, and performance. We attempt to bring Ritual Studies in conversation with Science Studies and History and Philosophy of Science.

SRC is unique in incorporating ritual studies into a larger program on science and religion. We plan to look specifically at the role of ritual in scientific practice and laboratory life, and the role of religious ritual in health and healing. Our emphasis is on methodological research that addresses many of the research projects located in other themes.

Topics in this module include

  • Rituals and the making of science
  • Religious Rituals and healthcare outcome
