Install the Software

The Dataverse Network software provides a full solution as a publishing data system for Universities or other organizations.  At IQSS, we host a Dataverse Network open to all researchers, publishers and data distributors that choose to upload the data in our repository, through a dataverse (for more information in this option, see the Data Holders section).

If you choose to host a Dataverse Network for your organization, then you will need to install the software and maintain your own repository for the data files. This option gives you higher control on where the data files reside, how often they are backed up, etc, but it adds complexity by having to maintain the software and dependable components in large servers, install upgrades, and provide adequate support to your users.

Requirements

If you are a system administrator or technical support group interested in installing the Dataverse Network software for your organization, you will need:

• A web server to run Glassfish. See the Glassfish website for details on OS and other requirements.
• A database server to run PostgreSQL. See the PostgreSQL website details on OS and other requirements.
• RServe running in a Linux server.

NOTE: Glassfish, PosgreSQL and RServe can all be run in the same physical server if desired.

Downloads

Download the latest Dataverse Network release, version 2.1.2, from Sourceforge.

If this is a new installation, please refer to the Installer's Guide for details. If you are upgrading from version 2.1, refer to the blog entry, How to upgrade from DVN v2.1.1 to v2.1.2.

Note that this option is for you if you choose to host a Dataverse Network for your organization and maintain the software and data repository on your own. If you are interested in creating a dataverse with our IQSS Dataverse Network, go to the Data Holders section.

Study versioning: You can now easily track all the changes made to your studies and reference both old data files as well as current ones. Users can view the changes between study versions and see who has contributed to each version. You can also edit a study and review your changes while keeping the released version of the study intact for the end users. When you are ready, you can release the new, updated version.
• More options for contributors to your dataverse: We are introducing two new types of dataverses, Open dataverse and Wiki dataverse. In an Open dataverse, users can add studies by simply creating an account, and can edit their own studies any time, even after the  study is released. In a Wiki dataverse, users cannot only add studies by creating an account, but also edit any study in that dataverse. Contributors cannot, however, release a study directly. After their edits, they submit it for review and a dataverse administrator or curator will release it. We have also added more ways to configure the contributor role for dataverses that are neither "Open" or "Wiki".
• Deaccession of studies: If a study is no longer valid,it can now be deaccessioned so it's unavailable to users but still has a working citation. A reference to a new study can be provided when deaccessioning a study. Only Network Administrators can now permanently delete a study once it has been released.
• Harvesting Performance improvements and numerous bug fixes in file upload, search, etc.

This is a minor update release. It contains the following changes:

• A set of options in the Utilities page for managing handle registration.
• Additional logic has been added to the filedownload component for accessing files that require special authorization.
• When defining a dynamic query for a collection, the query search results have been limited to at most 30,000 studies.
• A fix in the POR file ingest component.

Version 1.3 Patch

Release date: September 16, 2008

This patch includes spam email prevention code, fixes for the data field/cross tabs issue, and fixes fo subsetting issues. The Project recommends that you upgrade the DSB component as well, including the R installation for the Rvdcutil package.
