Mission Statement

The Academic Resource Center (ARC) at Harvard University supports the academic missions of Harvard College and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences by helping create conditions that will enable all students to access the transformative power of a liberal arts and sciences education. We are committed to empowering students to reach their full academic potential in an inclusive and equitable environment.

Overview of Services

The ARC helps create conditions for optimizing student learning by providing a range of support services that draw on research in the behavioral and learning sciences. Students have access to academic coaching, accountability sessions, peer tutoring, English language conversation partners, and workshops.

Academic coaches work with students to help them bring out their academic best. Through one-on-one sessions, accountability groups and hours, and group workshops, academic coaches introduce students to techniques for managing time, reading strategically, studying effectively, building better habits, and much more. They also assist students with prioritizing goals, creating accountability structures, customizing their learning environment, connecting with instructional staff, and finding the resources they need.

Peer tutoring provides students with an opportunity to learn from the diversity of their peers and to engage with one another outside the classroom. When students need help with a specific course, the ARC connects them to a network of trained peer tutors who meet with students individually or in small groups. Peer tutors support students' learning by reviewing materials from class and working through critical concepts and areas of confusion. English language conversation partners provide conversational practice for students who are non-native English speakers.

The Academic Resource Center operates under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and all medical and personal information reported to ARC staff is protected under the parameters of this law. University officials who have a legitimate educational interest in obtaining information about student academic needs may request this information from the ARC on a need-to-know basis without further authorization from the student. The ARC strives to respect student privacy and takes care in staying within legal compliance with their information.

The ARC's physical location (1414 Mass Ave, Floor 3R) is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Students can view the available times for ARC services (academic coaching, accountability groups, peer tutoring, and workshops) on the ARC Scheduler. All services are available both in person and virtually.
