You will provide email addresses of a number of reference providers when you apply. 

At a time of its choosing, the search committee may email your providers with a request for recommendation letters.  Your reference providers submit the letters directly to Harvard through a web portal.

In some searches, recommendation letters are solicited as soon as you apply.  In others, recommendation letters are only solicited for late-stage candidates.
