Composer and pianist Harold Shapero and arranger and composer Sid Ramin were interviewed in the Bernstein's Boston seminar on February 21, 2006. Both had long-standing relationships with Leonard Bernstein. Shapero met Bernstein at Harvard University, where they joined forces to give piano concerts together. Ramin was a childhood friend of Bernstein's who became his student and later, a musical collaborator on projects including West Side Story, which he helped orchestrate. In these overlapping interviews, they discuss Bernstein's musical development in college and before, including his experiences with classical and popular pieces. They also reminisce about their relationships with Bernstein as teacher, collaborator, and friend.
