Welcome to our group site.

We are primarily interested in how planets generate their magnetic fields. Of the planets within our Solar System, all except Mars and Venus presently generate magnetic fields as a result of dynamo action in their interiors, and Mars used to before it became extinct magnetically. The fields generated range from Saturn with an axisymmetric field to Uranus and Neptune which have magnetic poles nearer to the equator than the geographical poiles.

We use a range of techniques: observations, which today come from spacecraft but in trhe past on Earth came from many sources including sailing ships on voyages of exploration; numerical models; theory; and laboratory experiments. However, understanding magnetic field generation in planetary interiors does not standalone from other aspects of planetary sciences, so we also study planetary structure and evolution.
