Professor at Harvard Medical School
Connie Cepko

Constance Cepko and her colleagues study the development of the central nervous system of vertebrates, with an emphasis on the development of the retina. They are also studying the mechanisms of photoreceptor degeneration, and working towards gene therapy for prevention of blindness. Constance went to college at the University of Maryland and completed her Ph.D at MIT under the direction of Nobel Prize winner Phillip Sharp. As a Post-doctoral fellow she studied retroviral vectors that she used to understand the development of the retina. Cepko's laboratory has identified several genes required for retinal development. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and won the 2011 Alfred W. Bressler Prize in Vision Science for her work in retina development.
