Cases for Culture

Exploring a Hybrid Genre of Scholarship between STEM and the Humanities

Harvard-based faculty members from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Harvard Business School, Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard Medical School, Harvard John A Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the Harvard Art Museums propose to launch collaborative research that would explore creating a hybrid genre of scholarly essays provisionally called "Cases for Culture". The innovation is presently urgent as humanities programs are losing ground to STEM fields in universities. The objective is to combine measurable sciences and speculative humanities in ways that can respond to warning signs on either side of the current divide between STEM and the Liberal Arts.

Following an initial seminar in Fall 2018, which will include colleagues from other universities and the medical profession, the aim is to consider how to promote hybrid cases, and then develop courses, publications, and public events.
