Vowel Chart Exercise

This interactive drag-and-drop exercise will help you learn the positions of some common phonemes in a diagram of the mouth. In the player below, click & hold on the phonemes on the left and drag them to their proper places in the mouth diagram at right (clicking again where you want them to go). When you are done, click Check at the bottom. If your answers are incorrect, click Retry and try again. Not all of the places in the mouth diagram will be used. When you finish, print this page, write in the three remaining phonemes, and bring it to section.

NOTE: This exercise was drawn up using a slightly different configuration of the vowels (found in some reference works). For this reason we spot you one: the open o of "paw" [ɔ] goes in the bottom right box; you can work out the other sounds around it.
