Functional MRI studies of memory and navigation
Research in humans and animals has focused on the role of medial temporal lobe structures for memory and spatial navigation. In my talk, I will present research from fMRI studies carried out in my laboratory exploring these behaviors in humans. These studies have examined brain interactions while people navigate in complex and landmark free virtual reality environments, and while they disambiguate overlapping spatial routes. I will also discuss work that addresses a problem posed by robotics researchers that requires correctly assessing that one has returned back to a given location, known as loop closure.
