Benefits

  • Fellows will join a CJD cohort and a national network of exceptional environnmental justice advocates and public servants committed to the use of data, design, and scientific methods for the advancement of their communities.
  • Fellows will build foundational knowledge and skills in data science aimed at supporting their advocacy and public service  work
  • Fellows will receive a modest finacial stipend of $10,000 to compensate them for their time invested in Fellowship activities.  We expect the stipend will be disbursed in monthly installments.
  • Fellows will receive 1:1 consultation from members of the CJD Board of Mentors and Harvard Project Team, who can provide perspective and insight from deep experience in the advocacy, design, and data science spaces.
  • Selected Fellows' projects will receive data curation, software engineering, and web development support to prototype community-serving applications from technical personnel of the IQSS and Google Data Commons.

Eligibility

  • Fellows must be able to represent the needs of a vulnerable environmental justice community(ies) in the United States.
  • Fellows must have a demonstrated record of engagement in community advocacy, public service, organizing, journalism, policy development, and/or scholarship in one or more areas of climate justice such as planning and urban development, tree canopy, stormwater management, contaminated site remediation, or any other matter of environmental justice
  • Fellows must be based in the United States during the fellowship program period  (May - December, 2022)

Note that -

  • Previous technical experience in data science or design is not required
  • No academic degree is required to apply and we welcome current students

Expectations

  • Fellows will develop an impactful project that supports their enviromental justice advocacy or public service work through collaboration with the Fellowship program participants
  • Fellows will contribute to the intellectual development of the cohort through conversation, exchange of feedback, and presentation of their work
  • Fellows must commit to make every effort to attend all synchronous components of the fellowship program. Fellows will be expected to attend approximately 3 hr of synchronous meetings per month with fellowship peers, mentors, and directors via Zoom to be scheduled at a time as convenient as possible for all particiants.
  • Fellows are expected to spend a total of ~20 hr / month on fellowship activities (synchronous and asynchronous).  Asynchronous activity will focus on the Fellow's individual project, which can be directly related to their full time work in advocacy or public service.
