Each volume covers one year’s worth of materials which can be studied intensively over one semester or over a year. These books are intended for a broad audience of learners with diverse interests, backgrounds, prior exposure to Chinese language and culture, and motivations for pursuing Chinese as a foreign language. Whether students have traveled previously in China or not at all; whether their Chinese language ability is relatively consistent or uneven across different skill areas, they will find the series accommodating, motivating, and thought-provoking.
The design of this website is an ongoing project initiated by Prof. Jennifer Liu (Director of Chinese Language Program) and operated by Yuxiao Du (a Preceptor in Chinese) at Harvard University. We would like to thank Linlin Xiong, Fangzheng ZhangJie Ying, and Ying-Chieh Wang, who have devoted countless effort as the co-administrators. We are also grateful for the valuable suggestions offered by Xiaoshi Yu in planning out the project.

This Harvard Chinese Language Curriculum website provides important resources that go along with the 12 textbooks in Harvard Chinese Language Series (HCLS). HCLS is built on a ground-breaking, multi-year work that incorporates the latest research in language pedagogy and aims to transform the practice of Chinese language teaching and learning in the U.S. and abroad. The series is informed by a coherent, overarching pedagogical framework, focusing on systematically moving students from one level to the next, covering five levels of Chinese instruction and ultimately helping students reach the ACTFL “Superior” (near-native) level of proficiency. The first lesson of each textbook (together with the text audio and Quizlet) is freely accessible to the public as a sample. The full version of the text audio and Quizlet are available for enrolled students only with password required.

Other than textbook materials, this website also offers valuable information and resources for students' learning and teachers' instruction, which can be found under the "for students" and "for teachers" tabs respectively.
