There is a Need for Connectedness in Policy Decision-Making

"Despite being more connected and online than ever, our generation will be the most isolated and economically unequal. Our proposal aims to reflect how the youth feel towards future prospects after being impacted by COVID. As students of these times, we understand the importance of highlighting ‘blind spots’ in policymaking by connecting stakeholders to decision-makers. For example, the Paycheck Protection Program loans increased employment, but at a cost of $377,000 per job saved (Chetty et al 2020). By crowdsourcing and open-sourcing innovation, an active coalition between academics, businesses, and governments can bring public goods closer to their purposes. An interconnected problem requires a multilateral solution, and only a community that systemically includes and employs long-termism in policymaking can sustainably accomplish this. Decision-making is increasingly siloed."

About the Triple Helix Conference Series

Our partnered organizer, and affiliated collaborators, of Triple Helix aims to solve this through a series of conferences that bring business, academia, and government leaders together for inclusive policy-making discussions. Starting with a student case competition, workshops, career fairs, and conferences. As students, we know how to collaborate effectively: Our organizations have over three thousand members from over 20 time zones and hundreds of colleges, and our events have cumulatively hosted over four thousand participants (i.e. CUTC, Hack for the People, Pandemic Policython). In order to address "wicked problems" in policy, strategic alliance of interests is required. Allowing different perspectives at the table helps to reduce groupthink, and produce more inclusive policy solutions, as well as increase citizen and employees’ trust in leaders. This in turn leads to a more effective form of policy implementation.
