Additional Services for External Loans

Courier

A courier (or two) is required if:

  • the loaned work has a moderate to high insurance value
  • the loaned work is fragile or has special handling considerations
  • the transit is complex (e.g., multiple shuttle stops)
  • the packing is complex
  • the exhibit installation is requires detailed knowledge of the object or expertise specific to Harvard Library staff

The courier should be someone knowledgeable about the loaned work and its requirements for installation. This is typically someone from the local library or conservation staff.

Customs Agent/Broker

A Customs Agent/Broker should be used when works are travelling internationally or any time a loaned work requires additional supervision. A Customs Agent/Broker will arrange your shipment and make sure that it complies with U.S. Customs Service regulations and the regulations of customs offices in other countries. Supervision of your shipment will see it through all of the processes of handling and customs such as airport security and loading. Using a Customs Agent/Broker for supervision of a shipment with a single Harvard Library staff courier can also meet the Insurance Office requirement of two persons for Hand Carry shipments.
