The File Information Tool Set (FITS) is a tool that can identify and validate file formats, extract metadata embedded within files, and generate technical metadata in community-standard XML schemas. It works by wrapping many open source tools, comparing and consolidating their output. 

FITS was originally created by Harvard Library for use in its preservation repository, but now is set up to accept code fixes and enhancements by the preservation community.
