Takamichi Sakurai

Takamichi Sakurai is a Japanese scholar of social, political, and critical theory, and global intellectual history, currently teaching at Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main, and at Keio University (慶應義塾大学). With a focus on comparative studies of German and Japanese social and political thoughts, Sakurai's intellectual interests range across diverse topics: democracy, fascism, postfascism, populism, authoritarianism and alienation. At Heidelberg, in particular, he comparatively studied German-American sociologist Erich Fromm and the Japanese intellectual historian Fujita Shozo (藤田省三), from the psychoanalytic perspective of narcissism. A champion of comparative approaches to political theory, Sakurai currently serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed academic journal Comparative Political Theory (Brill).
