CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
This year’s conference will be held from Friday, February 7, to Saturday, February 8, 2020, at Harvard University’s Department of Music in Cambridge, MA, featuring a keynote address by Professor Lester Hu (UC Berkeley), entitled “Why the Chinese Hated Harmony, 1754-1781: Towards a Comparative Musicology from the Margins.” Roundtable speakers for our conference will include Lester Hu, Kate van Orden, Virginia Danielson, and Alexander Rehding.
Call for Papers:
Harvard University’s Graduate Music Forum invites proposals from graduate students for presentation and performances at the Spring 2020 conference. This two-day event is intended to foster the exchange and discussion of ideas amongst graduate students on a wide variety of musical genres and cultures, using diverse methodologies and interdisciplinary perspectives. The conference will be open to the public.
To facilitate a varied and wide-ranging program, we welcome proposals on any topic in music-studies, broadly construed. This includes submissions from graduate students in historical musicology, ethnomusicology, music theory, music composition, performance, and from those interested in music beyond the aforementioned sub-disciplines. Equal time will be allotted for presentation and discussion. The committee encourages a variety of presentation modes, which can include (but are not limited to):
- 20-Minute Academic Papers
- Concert, Performance, or Concert-Lecture
- Video or Documentary
- Alternative Prose Presentations
For conference-style papers, submissions should consist of a title and an abstract with a maximum of 300 words. Paper presentations will be allotted 20 minutes, with 10 minutes for questions and discussion.
For composers, performers, videographers, and others whose work exceeds the boundaries of traditional papers, abstracts should include a description of the creative work or presentation being submitted, its relevance to current scholarship, its technological/location requirements.
