A bowl of Kellogg's cornflakes with whole milk. Growing up, my mom prohibited any kind of sugary cereal, so I was left with one option: good old-fashioned Kellogg's cornflakes. After years of cornflake consumption, I eventually grew to love to taste, and this seemingly insignificant breakfast earned a special place in my heart. While many things are changing in our lives- the start of college, the chaos of COVID, going from childhood to adulthood, etc- the taste of a bowl of cornflakes is one thing that has stayed consistent with me all throughout my life, and I've realized how cereal has given me some sense of stability when it feels like everything is changing all the time. I moved to Texas a week ago to live the rest of the semester on my own, and I smile every time I eat a bowl of cornflakes. It tastes like home.
