Adapting a journey map exercise to an online activity may feel daunting, but the process and results can yield a treasure trove of actionable insights. In this presentation, we’ll share the experience of conducting a journey mapping exercise with college students online during the pandemic. You’ll learn how we developed our streamlined journey map template and how we used it during the session to capture the participant’s process, tools, and perceived level of effort with completing course assignments. We’ll discuss techniques for making the session as easy as possible for the participants and how to effectively analyze what can sometimes be complicated data. We will provide links to our journey map template and rapport-building questions that you can adapt for your own work.

Amy Deschenes is the Head of UX & Digital Accessibility for Harvard Library. Her primary role is to improve the usability of Harvard Library websites and search tools. In 2015 she lead the establishment of the User Research Center, a usability and digital accessibility testing lab at Harvard Library. In 2020 she adapted consulting, training, and recruiting for virtual work.
