This research is a study of students' experiences at suburban high schools in the Greater Boston area. The goal of the study is to examine the culture and standards of different high schools with respect to academic and non-academic achievement, and the ways in which these shape students’ experiences in school.

To collect data about each school, we will rely on a mixed-methods research design that encompasses three components:

  1. qualitative semi-structured interviews with students and school staff
  2. ethnographic observations at the school, and
  3. archival research

The findings of the project will be compared at a later point of the research project with an analogous research project on high schools in Germany.
