Curricular Opportunities

Coursework: As a part of your degree at HGSE, IP Fellows take the following courses* (for a total of 14 credits):

  • IP Fellowship Internship Training (Summer 2022, 2 credits): IP Fellows will receive intensive training in Identity Project implementation, classroom observation, and survey implementation skills. As part of this course, IP Fellows will participate in the Equipping Educators for Equity through Ethnic-Racial Identity (E⁴) Professional Development. The requirements for this course will take place virtually during the summer term, in June/July. Scheduling will not conflict with other HGSE Foundations required courses (e.g., How People Learn in June and July; Leading Change, Evidence, and Equity and Opportunity in August).

  • Translating ERI Theory and Research to Practice (Fall 2022, 4 credits): This course will cover relevant topics such as adolescent development as it pertains to identity formation, ethnic-racial identity content knowledge, Prevention Science, and translation of research and theory to practice.

  • Research-Practice Practicum (Yearlong, 4 credits in Fall 2022 and 4 credits in Spring 2023): This practicum course, designed specifically for the IP Fellows, will focus on applied training in research and teacher support focused on culturally sustaining pedagogical practices. This includes continued graduate-level training in research methods such as semi-structured interviewing and coding skills, survey data collection and analysis, data management, observational methods, and transcription. Time in this practicum will also be devoted to planning and preparing to share your work through formal opportunities such as the Student Research Conference at HGSE. Additionally, this course will focus on applying culturally sustaining pedagogical approaches in the classroom and how to support teachers in doing this in real time.

*Note: The IP Fellowship is designed to complement HGSE program curricula. You will be able to work with your advisor to design a program of study that fulfills degree requirements alongside the IP Fellowship requirements.
