The HMS Academy

The Academy supports the broad HMS community’s medical and medical science educators and facilitates the development of faculty, trainees, and students interested in and involved in medical and medical science education. The Academy’s role is to develop, support, and sustain a diverse, inclusive community of leaders in education and a culture of excellence in teaching, learning, and educational scholarship.

The Academy aims to advance the education of physicians and scientists throughout Harvard Medical School by aligning with HMS’s program in medical education to

1. support HMS’s educational community,
2. foster the careers of educators in medicine and science,
3. provide educational programming,
4. stimulate educational innovations,
5. support educational research and scholarship.

The Harvard Medical School Master's in Medical Education Program

Harvard Medical School Master's in Medical Education Program

The mission of the HMS Master of Medical Science in Medical Education (MMSc-Medical Education) is to give those who already excel in one of the health sciences disciplines an opportunity to turn their specialized knowledge and skill towards the advancement of health professions education. Through research, skill building, and innovation, the HMS MMSc-Medical Education seeks to transform health professions education in the service of advancing the health sciences and healthcare nationally and internationally. Graduates of our program will be well positioned to lead progress and make transformative change.

The HMS MMSc-Medical Education is a two-year program with two primary goals:

• To give students a solid foundation in the theories and principles underpinning health professions education such as the science of learning, strategies of curriculum development and education design, adult learning theories, integration of education technology, and principles of assessment.
• To provide students with comprehensive tools and protected time to engage in research on the most important issues in the field. Our research objective includes empirical work and hypothesis testing using quantitative and qualitative analysis.

The program is committed to flexibility in order to address participants' unique goals. Modifications to the recommended curriculum may be feasible.

Please note that full-time, benefits eligible faculty and staff at HMS and the affiliated institutions/hospitals are eligible for a scholarship equivalent to 10% of the full time tuition rate. Please notify the program if you think you are eligible for this scholarship. Boston Children's Hospital

Boston Children's Hospital Academy for Teaching and Educational Innovation and Scholarship

The goal of the Boston Children's Hospital Academy for Teaching and Educational Innovation and Scholarship is to enhance teaching across the hospital, foster scholarship in education, and support career advancement for educators. We will work to achieve these goals by establishing an interprofessional and multi-disciplinary learning community that promotes educational collaboration and resource sharing through seminars, workshops, networking, and consultation on teaching skills and CV/resume development. Members must be committed to improving their teaching or leadership in education, with an ultimate goal to contribute to scholarship in health professional education. Through the Academy’s efforts, we aim to foster recognition of Boston Children's teachers locally and as national and international leaders.

Brigham and Women's Hospital

Brigham Education Institute

Launched in 2016, the Brigham Education Institute (BEI) aims to facilitate the design and implementation of their educational offerings, undertake relevant research, and provide access to resources and professional development opportunities for all educators across Brigham and Women’s Hospital. A dynamic component of their nationally ranked academic center, the BEI coordinates a wide range of programs specifically focused on the educational development of their constituents. Through their historic affiliation with Harvard Medical School (HMS), they leverage multiple networks to extend their resources, thus maximizing their collaborative approach to career advancement.

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

BIDMC Academy

The BIDMC Academy, directed by Drs. Grace Huang and Daniel Ricotta, supports the academic advancement of faculty across BIDMC by delivering monthly seminars for professional development, providing mentorship opportunities, and creating a community to collaborate across disciplines. Our expanded mission as of AY19 encompasses the needs of clinicians as well as educators and reflects a secular trend in how patients are cared for at academic centers.​ Programming this year includes: faculty wellness, writing the HMS CV narrative, habits of systems thinkers to approach problems, creating an academic niche using social media, and publishing as a clinician. We also offer CV consultation, peer observation, and master clinician coaching. Carl J. Shapiro Institute for Education and Research

The mission of the Carl J. Shapiro Institute for Education and Research at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is to support, promote, and develop innovative programs and models for the dual activities of teaching and conducting research at academic medical centers.

Cambridge Health Alliance

The Cambridge Health Alliance Center for Professional and Academic Development

The Cambridge Health Alliance Center for Professional and Academic Development was established for CHA's credentialed medical staff by the CHA Provider Organization (CHAPO) in 2011 to:

• Cultivate professional satisfaction and career advancement
• Align academic pursuits and CHA's strategic aims
• Help clinicians lead improvement and change
• Create external partnerships and convene national conversations
• Nurture relationships, joy and meaning in work

Center for Educational Innovation and Scholarship

The Center for Educational Innovation and Scholarship (CEIS) aims to promote scholarship and innovation in undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate education at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Harvard Macy Institute

The Harvard Macy Institute brings together health care professionals, educators, and leaders to discuss the critical challenges of the day and design innovative solutions that have a lasting impact on the way medicine is practiced and students are educated. Our goal is to foster transformative learning experiences that prepare the Harvard Macy scholars to lead institutional change as well as discover and harness new perspectives which may contribute to their professional growth

Weave

Weave provides an interest-driven way for students to find invested faculty mentors for professional or personal guidance. On this platform, faculty may personalize their profiles, including sharing a preferred cadence for meeting with students, indicating topics that they are willing to discuss, and showing or hiding their profiles based on their availability. We hope that Weave provides an opt-in, customized mentoring structure with clear, adjustable expectations for both mentors and mentees that may foster meaningful mentorship experiences. For residents who would like to mentor students, development of a resident mentor portal is in the works!

Harvard Graduate School of Education

The Zuckerman Fellows Program equips people from the fields of medicine, law, and business to provide leadership for the common good by making it possible for them to pursue public service degrees at the Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard Graduate School of Education, or Harvard School of Public Health.

Candidates for the Zuckerman Fellows Program are individuals who have, or are pursuing, an MBA, JD, MD, or DMD/DDS degree from an accredited U.S. institution AND are seeking an additional Master’s degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Harvard School of Public Health, or Harvard Kennedy School. Candidates must be citizens of the United States.

In addition to their formal coursework, Zuckerman Fellows participate in a yearlong co-curricular program that includes small-group discussions with members of the Harvard faculty as well as other leading academics and practitioners, personal and professional skill-building workshops, and a field trip. Taken together, these interdisciplinary activities help the Fellows integrate the classroom learning with their individual career plans and interests.

Harvard Initiative for Learning and Teaching (HILT)

The mission of the Harvard Initiative for Learning and Teaching (HILT) is to catalyze innovation and excellence in learning and teaching at Harvard. As a University-wide initiative, HILT is overseen by the Office of the Vice Provost for Advances in Learning (VPAL). Four sub-goals guide HILT’s work: 1) build on Harvard’s strengths in teaching and learning; 2) meet the educational needs of students (both technological and pedagogical); 3) strengthen the science of learning; and 4) develop robust networks at Harvard around teaching and learning innovation.

HILT hosts a number of large and small events throughout the year geared toward building connections among and strengthening resources of the Harvard community. Over the course of ten years, HILT will demonstrably seed hundreds of local innovations and experiments at a variety of scales. We also facilitate the “institutionalization” of innovations and experiments that are successful such that they are self-sustaining.
