Please see the following sites for the most up-to-date guidance: Harvard Travel Guidance and Harvard GSS COVID-19 travel advice.

Please note: This funding award is for an in-person program.

For up to date information and further details on the co-ed Ewha International Summer College (EISC) Program please visit the Ewha EISC websitehttps://summer.ewha.ac.kr/summer/index.do

The Ewha International Summer College has been running for 50 years and offers one 4-week session and another 2-week session each summer. The sessions are held right on the Ewha campus and students are able to stay in an on-campus dormitory in the center of the campus. The Korea Institute Tuition Waiver covers Session 1, the 4- week program. Session 1 provides around 40 courses taught by faculty from Ewha and top foreign universities. Students may choose up to 3 courses from a full range of subjects such as art & design, business, computer science, gender studies, history, Korean studies, physics, political science, and Korean language. For the KI Tuition Waiver, you may opt to focus only on Korean language (taking all Korean courses) or take a Korean language course and a content course.

Students have a wide variety of courses to select from and active field trips are also an option for those students who wish to make the most of their time in Seoul, Korea. The program is internationally diverse with more than 400 students from 75+ different universities and 15+ different countries. A lot of interdisciplinary courses utilize Seoul as a classroom and students will have the opportunity to explore Seoul through excursions both within their class of choice and in their own time. Please see their website for their course offerings: http://summer.ewha.ac.kr/

The Korea Institute will award one undergraduate summer language study grant (1 full tuition waiver for 2 Ewha EISC classes) for a Harvard undergraduate in any concentration to attend the co-ed Ewha International Summer College (EISC) - (Session 1, the 4-week program) to learn Korean language. You may opt to focus only on Korean language (taking all Korean courses) or take a Korean language course and a content course. This full tuition waiver will cover the Ewha application fee, as well as, the tuition fees (for up to 2 classes) and up to $500 total towards field trip fees for the Ewha International Summer College (EISC). The Korea Institute will provide round trip airfare (economy class, non-refundable, up to $2300). Students must arrange and purchase their own airline ticket. Students are still responsible for housing (dorm) costs, meals and general living expenses.

Please note: For any Ewha EISC classes chosen and taken beyond the 2 Tuition Waiver awarded classes, students are responsible for full payment of a 3d Ewha EISC course. Students are also responsible for any field trip fees over $500.

Remember to apply directly to the Korea Institute via CARAT, not via the Ewha on-line application form.

Preference is strongly given to returning Harvard students.

Best to consult with the MCS  (Mignone Center for Career Success) Summer Funding staff to see if there is any MCS funding to possibly cover costs not covered by the KI grant.

[Ewha may also offer a discount for students who participate in both Session 1, the 4-week program and Session 2, the 2 week program as a set. Please note: the KI Tuition Waiver is only for Session 1, the 4 week Program.]

For Transfer Credit, please note you must apply separately to the Harvard Office of International Education (OIE) to possibly receive transfer credit for your summer courses taken in Korea. The transfer credit application process is due to OIE (before you go abroad in the summer) often in very early February. Please remember the credit transfer process is an additional application process in addition to the KI Undergraduate Summer Language Study Grants at Ewha (Tuition Waiver) application.

Harvard College Summer Funding Policy 2024

https://oue.fas.harvard.edu/summer-2023-funding-policy

Harvard College prioritizes the wide distribution of Summer funding to ensure that as many undergraduate students as possible can have a meaningful summer experience. For funded Summer 2024 experiences, students may only apply Harvard University funding to one Summer experience, regardless of duration of time (ex. only four weeks or a part-time effort). *Co-funding between multiple sources of funding is permitted only if the funding jointly supports the same Summer experience.

Exceptions to the Summer Funding Policy are uncommon and will be reviewed on an individual basis; students should make exception requests to their Resident Dean, who will forward on to the Office of Undergraduate Education. All exceptions will be approved by the Office of Undergraduate Education.

Failure to adhere to the Harvard College Summer funding policy may result in a student being referred to the Administrative Board or Honor Council.

* The only recognized deviation from the Summer Funding Policy applies to students conducting senior thesis research. Students in this specific situation may apply Harvard University funding to two different opportunities, given that one source of funding supports thesis research and that the two opportunities in question do not overlap in time. Thesis researchers in this case may still apply to multiple sources of research funding to enable potential co-funding opportunities.

Harvard College policy may prevent the sponsorship of undergraduate activities taking place in countries with certain U.S. Department of State travel warnings.
