History

The neuroscience communities at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) have a history of collaboration and partnership. Dr. Peter MacLeish, a graduate of the HMS Department of Neurobiology, is the founding director of the Morehouse Neuroscience Institute and founding chair of the Department of Neurobiology at MSM. Several faculty in the HMS Program in Neuroscience have served on the External Advisory Board for the Morehouse Neuroscience Institute, and two HMS faculty - Drs. David Potter and Ed Furshpan - taught Principles of Neurobiology at MSM for ten years.

During the 50th anniversary celebration for the HMS Department of Neurobiology in fall of 2016, conversations between Dr. MacLeish and Dr. Rosalind Segal (the Director of the Harvard PhD Program in Neuroscience (PiN) at the time) led to a new collaboration between PiN and the MSM BS/MS Program in Neuroscience to provide additional professional development and quantitative training to MSM students in the accelerated Master's program through a summer visit to HMS. This summer program, which launched summer of 2017, seeded what has expanded into the Morehouse and Harvard Partnership in Neuroscience Growth (MAHPING), a bi-directional collaboration between our institutions spanning neuroscience education and research.
