Inês Laíns was born in Portugal, where she finished her medical degree and master’s degree with distinction in 2010 (Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal). She began her ophthalmology residency training at the Coimbra Universitary Hospital in January 2012, and during her first year of training she was selected for the Harvard Medical School (HMS) Clinical Scholars’ Research Training program (CSRT). From January 2013 to December 2014, she received intensive training on clinical research, with online classes twice per week and in-person training through this program. In September 2013 she also enrolled in a PhD program at University of Coimbra and received a scholarship from the National Institute of Health in Portugal (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology), which enables her to have protected time for research.

In 2014, Inês Laíns was awarded with the Junior Grant and Career Development Award of the HMS Portugal Program that gave her the opportunity to come to the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (MEEI/HMS). Under the mentorship of Dr. Joan W. Miller and Dr. Deeba Husain, she is primarily working on age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and on imaging of retinal and choroidal diseases. Her current main project is a multi-site study on biomarkers of AMD.
