2022 n2c2 Shared Task and Workshop

Announcement and Call for Participation

We are pleased to announce the 2022 n2c2 Shared Task on Challenges in Natural Language Processing for Clinical Data.

This year, National NLP Clinical Challenges (n2c2, formerly known as i2b2 NLP Shared Tasks) will bring you three tasks:

  • Track 1: Contextualized Medication Event Extraction
    Using the Contextualized Medication Event Dataset (CMED), the overall task of this track is to identify all medication mentions within a clinical note, indicate whether a change has been/is being discussed, and classify change events along 5 contextual dimensions.
  • Track 2: Extracting Social Determinants of Health (SDOH)
    Using the Social History Annotation Corpus (SHAC), this task explores the extraction of SDOH from clinical notes, including substance use (alcohol, drug, tobacco), employment, and living status information. 
  • Track 3: Progress Note Understanding: Assessment and Plan Reasoning 
    Using the MIMIC-III Dataset sampled from all the intensive care units, the goal of this task is to predict physicians’ reasoning process as a relation between the assessment section and plan subsections of daily progress notes.

The three tracks will run on similar timelines and will be coordinated with respect to their dissemination efforts and the accompanying workshop.

Rough timeline

  • Registration begins: December 3, 2021
  • Training Data Release: February 1 – May 2, 2022
  • Test Data Release: May 2 – July 4, 2022
  • System Outputs Due: May 6 – July 8, 2022
  • Aggregate Results Release: July 1–29, 2022
  • Abstract Submissions Due: August 1–15, 2022
  • Invitation to workshop: TBD
