Submission Guidelines and FAQ


Please note that accepted submissions from the 2022 cycle will be published with accepted submissions from the upcoming 2023 cycle in a special double issue, or, at the request of the applicant, be withdrawn. 

  • What types of submissions are eligible for publication?  

Persephone accepts undergraduate essays, compositions, translations, linguistic commentaries, shortened theses, original artwork, photography, and poetry to be published in an annual edition every spring. All submissions must pertain to the field of Classics. Applicants are welcome to submit more than one piece for consideration.  

  • How should my submission be formatted?

For general submissions, there are no specific requirements with regards to submission length, spacing, font, etc. However, citations should be formatted in Chicago style, and all identifying information (name, school, etc.) should be omitted. If submitting a thesis, please submit a stand-alone chapter or excerpt: due to limited space, we cannot publish full versions. Participants should be aware that all submissions may be shortened or formatted differently according to the journal's needs and specifications. 

  • Who can submit their work to Persephone? 

Applicants must be current undergraduate students, OR must have graduated within one year of the previous deadline (12/31/21). Applicants do not need to be Harvard students: we accept submissions from all accredited colleges and universities, both in the United States and abroad. Applicants do not need to be majoring in the field of Classics for their work to be considered for publication.

  • When is the application deadline for the 2023 issue? 

The deadline is December 31, 2022, though you are welcome to submit your work at any time, and it will be considered for the next valid cycle (spring 2024). 

  • How can I submit my work for consideration?

To submit, please send your work to We will send you a confirmation email when your work has been received. 

  • When can I expect to hear about the status of my submission? 

Applicants can expect to be notified about their submission status in early March (via email). The 2022/2023 double issue will be published in May. Applicants whose work has been accepted will receive a hard copy of the issue, if funding allows.
