Albert Sands Southworth (1811-1894) and Josiah Johnson Hawes (active 1808-1901)

The Boston studio of Southworth and Hawes was active between 1843 and 1863. The highly regarded photographic firm earned a reputation for elevating photography to fine art and was particularly well known for its perfection of the daguerreotype process and work in portraiture. The firm also experimented with the salted paper print process. In 1858, Southworth and Hawes created a series of panoramic views of Boston taken from the State House, which were widely reproduced. This particular print looking south shows the Boston Common bordered by streets and buildings. Other images, currently housed at the Boston Athenaeum, show Boston from the State House looking west, east, and northeast.
