George B. Shepherd (active 1850s)

The English photographer George B. Shepherd was active in Dover, Hastings, and Canterbury, England in the 1850s. The paper negative to the left from the Horblit Collection at Houghton Library is attributed to Shepherd. Shepherd sometimes waxed his negatives, which exhibit an almost three-dimensional quality. As a result they reveal well-defined highlights and detail. In the print below, Shepherd used a masking technique which provided a sharp delineation and contrast between the sky and the castle featured in the image.
