Among the adaptations that humans have evolved for bipedal running is the ability to effectively stabilize the head, which may be achieved in part by the nuchal ligament of the neck resisting forward pitching of the head during foot strike. Using motion capture techniques and electromyography, we are investigating whether head pitching is damped by the mass of each arm, via a linkage that includes the nuchal ligament and superior portion of the trapezius muscle.
