Planned Campus Wide Network Outage, Sunday, Sept 25, 2016, 6 a.m. -­ 2:00 p.m. EDT

Outage Reason:   HMS/HSDM Campus Wide Network Maintenance
Description:
This is the final step of the HMS/HSDM campus wide network upgrade. Each building will be moved to the newer and faster network.
There will be NO network connectivity during this period. Please plan accordingly.

Please Do Not Upgrade to Sierra, Mac OS 10.12

Apple releases Sierra, Mac OS 10.12 tomorrow, but it is not compatible with all of the applications students need to use.
At this time, HMS Information Technology strongly recommends that HMS/HSDM students not upgrade to Sierra.
Sierrra is currently not compatible with the ExamSoft software used by HMS/HSDM, and other applications including but not limited to MATLAB.  Until these incompatibilities are resolved, students should NOT install/upgrade current devices to Mac OS 10.12 and they should not buy new computers with 10.12 pre-installed.

Antivirus software for HMS & HSDM students.

HMS IT is offering free antivirus protection for student laptops; ESET Endpoint Antivirus.  Bring your laptop to TMEC 225 between 8am and 5pm, and we'll install it for you.  Plan for the install to take 10-20 minutes.

IT Upgrades Network in Vanderbilt Hall

HMS Information Technology announces the successful completion of the Vanderbilt Hall network infrastructure upgrade, providing denser wireless coverage, offering faster service, and more bandwidth to accommodate the larger number of residents’ wireless devices accessing more HD video content than ever before. 

As part of the upgrade, IT increased the campus bandwidth, replaced all Vanderbilt Hall network switches, and installed 93 new wireless access points in residents’ rooms, thereby increasing wireless coverage from 35% to 99%.  In the last phase of the project, IT

Network connectivity will be UNAVAILBLE in the Vanderbilt building on Saturday April 2nd from 6AM – 8PM.

Who is affected?

Everyone in Vanderbilt Hall.  This upgrade will require a building-wide network outage, which will impact all Vanderbilt users at the time of the upgrade - Saturday April 2nd from 6AM – 8PM.

How will this impact my work in Vanderbilt?

Computers and devices connected to the network in Vanderbilt Hall will lose all network access during this outage.  This includes both hardwired (LAN) and wireless connections.

Please Do Not Upgrade to Mac OS El Capitan 10.11

Apple released El Capitan, Mac OS 10.11 last month, but it is still not compatible with ExamSoft. 

At this time, HMS Information Technology strongly recommends that HMS/HSDM students not upgrade to El Capitan.

El Capitan is currently not compatible with the ExamSoft software used by HMS/HSDM.  Students should NOT install/upgrade current devices to Mac OS 10.11 and they should not buy new computers with 10.11 pre-installed.

Please Do Not Upgrade to Windows 10

On July 29th, 2015, Microsoft releases Windows 10, its newest operating system for mobile devices, tablets, laptop and desktop computers.

At this time, HMS Information Technology strongly recommends that HMS/HSDM students not upgrade to Windows 10.

Student email migration, Summer 2015.

Student email is being improved and expanded by moving to Microsoft Office365.  Over the course of the summer, each class will be migrated together; you'll receive an email notification in advance of your migration.

Planned Network Outage Vanderbilt 1st Floor | April 1st & 3rd

On Wednesday, April 1st, and Friday, April 3rd, Engineering and Construction will need to shutdown emergency power to wire new circuit panels.  The emergency generator will be turned on.  During the switchover to emergency generator there will be a blip in power and the network switch will reboot.  The reboot process will take about 5 min and during that time no network connectivity will be available.  Once the maintenance has been completed, the switchover from generator to emergency power will also generate a blip in power which will result in a reboot of the switch.
