NIAID awards Dr. Brendan Podell,TBRU LIMAA investigator at CSU, funding to study the impact of viatmin A deficiency on TB progression and immunity

October 23, 2017

In recent prospective studies among human cohorts in Lima, Peru, led by TBRU LIMAA co-PI Dr. Megan Murray, vitamin A was identified as a substantial risk factor for progression to active TB among exposed household contacts, linking the risk of TB progression and vitamin A deficiency. Dr. Podell proposed and received funding for a pilot study to further study the immune mechanisms and impact on TB outcome of vitamin A deficiency in a guinea pig model. Funding for the study was obtained through the NIAID’s supplemental funding mechanism that provides support for high priority research opportunities emerging from the TBRU network.
