Dr. Ildiko Van Rhijn is co-lead of TBRU Project 2. Her lab works on CD1 molecules that bind antigenic self and bacterial lipids and T cells that recognize CD1-lipid complexes. In particular, she is interested the question of whether and how lipid-specific T cells are primed and expand in vivo during disease, and whether T cell receptor patterns are predictable.

Van Rhijn has discovered GEM T cells, a human T cell population that is highly specific for the mycobacterial lipid glucose monomycolate. The expansion and effector gene expression profile of GEM T cells as well as MAIT cells will be studied in M. tb exposed, non-infected people, M. tb infected, non-progressors, and active tuberculosis patients.
