Hussein Kalout is a Political Scientist, Professor of International Relations, Member of the Advisory Board of the Harvard International Review, and Research Scholar at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies. Previously he was a Fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs of Harvard University, Associate at the Harvard Kennedy School Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, and Senior Associate Fellow (non-resident) at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington-DC. Before joining Harvard in the current academic year, Mr. Kalout just finished his duties as the Special Secretary of Strategic Affairs of Brazil, as Member of the Ministers board of the Chamber of Foreign Trade and Investments, and as the President of the National Committee on Population and Development (2017-2019). Mr. Kalout served in other important positions in the Brazilian public administration as the Head of International Affairs of the Brazilian Supreme Court and as the Director-General of the Department for International legal Cooperation at the Prosecutor-General of the Republic Office. During the last 15 years, Mr. Kalout advised the Brazilian government in several projects within the Parliament in subjects related to Foreign Policy, International Cooperation, Sustainable Development, Economic Reforms, International Trade, National Defense, Energy Policies, and Public Security. Additionally, Mr. Kalout was the Chief Delegate of the Brazilian Government at the 51st Session of the United Nations International Conference on Population and Development in 2018, and he was also the Head of the Brazilian mission on the Belt & Road Forum for International Cooperation organized by the Chinese government, in Beijing, in 2017. Mr. Kalout has authored numerous op-eds, book chapters, articles and papers in scientific journals including Foreign AffairsHarvard International ReviewRoutledge (Global Discourse), and the Brazilian Journal on Foreign Policy. Mr. Kalout is also a Senior Columnist on International Politics in the influential Brazilian daily ÉPOCA. As a research scholar at Harvard University, his field of interest and expertise includes Middle Eastern geopolitics, comparative politics, international security & defense, authoritarianism and hybrid regimes, conflict & conflict resolution, sectarianism, national fragmentation, international law of armed conflict and armed movements. Finally, Mr. Kalout has been decorated by several institutions in Brazil and overseas and he is fully fluent in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Arabic.
