Submission Guidelines and FAQ

Please note that accepted submissions from the 2022 issue cycle are gradually being added to the published 2023 issue (attached below). The online issue will be continuously updated until all works have been included. The end result will be a complete double issue entitled: "Vol. 7, Nos. 1 & 2 (Spring 2022 & 2023). We thank our applicants and readers for their patience.

  • What types of submissions are eligible for publication?

Persephone accepts undergraduate scholarship, such as essays, compositions, translations, linguistic commentaries, and shortened theses (though note that this is not an all-inclusive list). In addition, original artwork, photography, and poetry is accepted for review. All submissions must pertain to the field of Classics. Applicants are welcome to submit more than one piece for consideration.

  • How should my submission be formatted?

For general submissions, there are no specific requirements with regards to submission length, spacing, font, etc. However, citations should be formatted in Chicago style, and all identifying information (name, school, etc.) should be omitted. If submitting a thesis, please submit a stand-alone chapter or excerpt: due to limited space, we cannot publish full versions. Participants should be aware that all submissions may be shortened or formatted differently according to the journal's needs and specifications.

  • Who can submit their work to Persephone?

Applicants must be current undergraduate students, OR must have graduated within one calendar year of the previous deadline (12/31/22). Applicants do not need to be Harvard students: we accept submissions from all accredited colleges and universities, both in the United States and abroad. Applicants do not need to be majoring in the field of Classics for their work to be considered for publication.

  • When is the application deadline for the 2024 issue?

The deadline is Friday, January 19, though you are welcome to submit your work at any time after this date, and it will be considered for the next issue cycle (Spring 2025).

  • How can I submit my work for consideration?

To submit, please send your work to harvardpersephonestaff@gmail.com. We will send you a confirmation email when your work has been received.

  • When can I expect to hear about the status of my submission?

Applicants can expect to be notified about their submission status the week of March 4 (via email). The issue will be published on May 1, 2024. Applicants whose work has been accepted will receive a hard copy of the issue, if funding allows.

  • Whom can I contact with further questions or concerns?

Please direct all questions concerning the submission and editing process to harvardpersephonestaff@gmail.com.
