In the early summer of 1976, Thomas K. Seligman, curator in charge of the Art of Africa, Oceania and Americas at De Young Museum, received a telephone call and was told that Harald Wagner, better known as Harald, recently deceased, had willed to the De Young Museum in San Francisco, his collection of Pre-Columbian Art. The unexpected gift was over 70 rare and fragile fragments of paint that the wall murals from that the work that this was the largest collection of their kind outside of Mexico.
