Exhibition Review

Early in the exhibition planning process, the exhibition organizer and stakeholders review all collection items on the completed Checklist Template to assess the condition of objects chosen for exhibition, and to determine the overall design and content needs of the exhibition. Exhibition stakeholders typically include collections staff (e.g., collection manager, curator, bibliographic/subject specialist), conservation staff (e.g., format-specific conservator), and a preparator (e.g., conservation technician).

For the review, the stakeholders should consider:

  • Condition of work(s)
  • Value/historical significance/rarity of individual works
  • Previous exhibition history
  • Anticipated use of the work that might conflict with the exhibition period
  • Photography requirements for printed publication or online exhibition
  • Inclusion of additional stakeholders if relevant (e.g., imaging staff, AV coordinator, digital project coordinator, designer, as well as relevant input from guest curators, donors, and school deans)
